Omata
Omata is a small rural community located on State Highway 45 approximately 6km southwest of New Plymouth, making it an attractive option for those seeking a country lifestyle within minutes of the city. The area is surrounded by productive farmland, with the coastline and Tapuae Marine Reserve nearby.
At the heart of the community is Omata School, established in 1853. The co-educational full primary school caters for Years 1–8 and has approximately 210 students.
While commercial amenities within Omata itself are limited, New Plymouth is only a short drive away, providing easy access to supermarkets, shopping, healthcare, hospitality and other services.
History: The Omata area was the site of the Omata Stockade, built to house soldiers during tensions at the time of the First Taranaki War in 1860–61, and is near the site of the Battle of Waireka on 28 March 1860.
