Urenui

Urenui is a settlement in northern Taranaki, It is located on State Highway 3 close to the shore of the North Taranaki Bight, 13 kilometers east of Waitara and 6 km south-west of Mimi.

The Urenui River flows past the settlement into the North Taranaki Bight. The beach camp at the river mouth is a popular summer holiday spot, the population of the town doubles during the summer months. Urenui has a favourable climate with warm summer months and mild winters. Many a fisherman has launched his boat at the beach camp and returned with a fine haul of fish.

Approximately 3 km eastward of the town is the Urenui Marae, the only remaining marae of Ngāti Mutunga.

History: A few kilometres north-east is Okoki pa historic reserve, where the ashes of Te RangiHiroa (Sir Peter Buck) are interred under a stylised canoe-prow memorial. The township began as a Taranaki military settlers settlement around the Urenui redoubt in 1865.
